Here’s the Data.

Most SEO teams optimize for rank. Rank #1 feels like the finish line. But SEMAI’s research on 187 queries across SERP and Google AI Overviews shows that ranking first gives you a 40.6% chance of being cited by GAIO. Rank #2 drops to 15.3%. Ranks 3 through 10 show effectively zero conversion. These are two different systems working from different editorial logic, and treating them as one is quietly costing you visibility.

SERP and GAIO Agree Less Than Half the Time

In 43% of queries, GAIO cites completely different sources from what ranks #1 and #2 in Google Search. Only 44.9% of queries show exact URL agreement between SERP and GAIO. (SEMAI, 2026) That means in more than half of all queries, the page Google ranks highest is not the page Google’s AI decides to cite.

This isn’t a quirk or an edge case. It’s the norm. GAIO and organic search are running parallel editorial processes with different source selection logic. Ranking well in one does not automatically transfer to the other. If your AEO strategy assumes your SEO rankings are doing the work, you’re operating with a gap you can’t see.

86% of GAIO citations come from websites not ranking #1 or #2 in Google Search for that same query. A brand with no strong SERP ranking can still get cited by GAIO if its content is structured correctly. (SEMAI, 2026)

The Rank Conversion Cliff Is Steeper Than You Think

Rank #1 converts to a GAIO citation 40.6% of the time. Rank #2 drops to 15.3%. Below rank #2, there is no evidence of any conversion to GAIO citation in the dataset. (SEMAI, 2026) Ranks 3 through 10 don’t exist from GAIO’s perspective.

That’s not a gradual decline. It’s a cliff. The difference between rank #1 and rank #2 is a 25-point drop in GAIO citation probability. The difference between rank #2 and rank #3 is going from 15.3% to zero. If you’re sitting at rank #3 for a high-value query, you have strong organic visibility and zero AI visibility on that same query. Those are two completely different competitive positions and most reporting treats them as the same thing.

The implication is uncomfortable but clear: if you can’t reach rank #1, the SERP ranking itself gives you no GAIO benefit. Your next best option is building a page specifically structured for AI citation rather than relying on your SERP position to do the work.

Your Best-Ranking Page Is Not Always Your Best AI Citation Page

In 20.8% of cases where the same brand appeared in both SERP and GAIO, Google’s AI cited a different page from that brand’s website than the one that ranked. (SEMAI, 2026) The brand got the citation. The ranked page didn’t.

This is one of the most actionable findings in the research. If GAIO is consistently bypassing your top-ranked page and pulling a different page from your domain, that second page is your real GAIO asset. It’s telling you what makes a page citation-worthy to AI as opposed to what makes it rank well in search. The two criteria overlap but they’re not the same.

The practical check: if you rank #1 or #2 for a high-value query, look at whether GAIO is citing that exact URL. If it’s citing a different page from your site, study what’s structurally different about that page. More specific scope, better answer-first structure, cleaner schema, tighter entity definition. That page is showing you what GAIO actually wants from your domain for that topic. Use it as a template to fix the pages that rank but don’t get cited.

86% of GAIO Citations Come From Outside the Top Two SERP Results

This is the finding that flips the challenger brand narrative. If 86% of GAIO citations come from websites not ranking #1 or #2 for that query, the door is open for brands with no dominant SERP position to win AI visibility on the same queries. (SEMAI, 2026)

GAIO is not simply an extension of organic rankings. It has its own source selection criteria: answer-first structure, entity clarity, schema markup, topical specificity. A page that’s built to directly answer a specific query can get cited by GAIO even if it’s not competing at the top of SERP. That’s a fundamentally different opportunity than traditional SEO offers, where a page at rank #8 contributes almost nothing to traffic or visibility.

For brands in competitive verticals where rank #1 is locked by large incumbents, this is the most important data point in the study. You don’t need to outrank them in SERP to appear alongside them in GAIO citations. You need to out-structure them for the specific query.

Two Separate Strategies. Two Separate Tracking Systems.

The data points to one conclusion: SERP rank and GAIO citation are different outcomes that need different strategies and different measurement. A brand can dominate SERP and be invisible in GAIO. A brand can have weak organic rankings and win GAIO citations on the same queries. Both scenarios exist in this dataset.

The mistake is using GSC rankings as a proxy for AI visibility. GSC shows you GAIO impressions for Google’s own AI Overviews feature, but it doesn’t tell you whether your ranked page is the one being cited or whether a different page on your domain is doing the work. And it gives you nothing on ChatGPT or Perplexity. You need platform-specific citation tracking to see which pages are actually being pulled into AI responses and which ranked pages are being ignored.

The full SERP vs GAIO dataset is at SEMAI’s SERP vs GAIO research page if you want to work through the query-level examples.

If I rank #1 on Google, does that guarantee I appear in AI Overviews?

No. Ranking #1 gives you a 40.6% chance of appearing in GAIO for that query, according to SEMAI’s research. That means roughly 60% of the time, Google’s AI Overview will cite a different source even when you hold the top organic position. GAIO and organic search run different source selection processes, and ranking well in one does not automatically transfer to the other.

How do I find out if GAIO is citing my site for a query?

Google Search Console shows AI Overviews impressions and clicks under the search appearance filter. This tells you which queries triggered a GAIO impression for your site. However, GSC doesn’t distinguish whether your ranked page or a different page on your domain was cited. For that level of detail you need an AEO tracking platform that monitors citation URLs, not just impression counts.

What makes a page citation-worthy to GAIO if not its search ranking?

GAIO prioritizes pages that directly answer a specific query in a machine-readable format: answer-first structure, clean entity definition, schema markup, and topical specificity over breadth. A narrowly scoped page that fully resolves one question will outperform a broad page that partially covers many topics. Domain authority matters but it doesn’t override structural clarity for AI citation purposes.

Find Out Which of Your Pages GAIO Is Actually Citing

SEMAI tracks GAIO citation data at the URL level so you can see which pages are being pulled into AI responses and which ranked pages are being bypassed. If the 40.6% conversion rate means you’re invisible on your top queries, the free audit shows you exactly where the gap is.See How It Works

Most SEO teams optimize for rank.
